Lou Anne:
to be able to organize the lunch table schedule, recess and duty schedule.

From Linda:
Not knowing much about databases -- the following is a list of what I think would be great to have. I'm sure there are other ways I could use it and perhaps some of what I wish I'd be able to do with it isn't possible. Most of what I need, I assume I would export to an excel spreadsheet and them "move it around."
the ability to get --
Class lists
Birthday lists - for whole school, including staff from Sept. to Aug. and by grade - from Sept. to Aug. and also oldest to youngest
Addresses for labels sheets - Parents, Children, Staff, Trustees
Address for above - to print directly onto envelopes
mail merges for letters to Single Parents, Bus Families (Wellesley/Boston), Community Fund families
Listing of those children coded with medical concerns
Census information - child's name, birthdate, grade address - sorted by zipcode
Name tags for specific groups of people
information for Alert Now - names, home phone, cell phones, email addresses
information for WhippleHill (Green Leaf) database - id number, name, title, full address, email addresses, second email address
and more . . .
Of supreme importance is that it is easy to get what I need. The above seems like it should be fairly standard in a database and would just require having a correct code for certain groups. However, in connecting with Gaylen to get names and addresses of parents in each grade to be run off on labels - she wasn't able, even with help from the software support people, to get me this. She gave me a list of (for instance) all the Pre-K families and addresses, but if there were parents with two different names, only one was listed and I had to go back in and add the second parent name.
The more intuitive the database is the better - the if and thens can get confusing.
I'm looking forward to learning more!

Linda: - the "five or so things" that I would ask both of the companies to be able to compare them fairly:
1. Please walk me through entering information on a new student.
2. How do I create affinity groups?
3. How do I select a group or groups to send out a mailing?
4. How do I choose how a letter and/or envelope should be addressed?
Mr. & Mrs. / 2 different names
child's name - Master, Miss
child's first and last name only
husband or wife -- when only one is on a committeeaddressing the letter and envelopes?
5. Please explain choosing different size envelopes, 6 x 9, invitation envelopes
6. Mail Merge - letters that I use from year to year?
7. Name Tags - set size, font, etc.
8. Labels of different sizes - be able to select children's names only - then set the size, font, etc.
9. How easily can I write letters on different size paper, cards, etc.?
10. If I wanted to create a list of children's birthdays - how would I do that?
11. Transcripts?
12. Select email addresses?
13. How could the database help me in creating the Tenacre Directory? What sort of software would I need in conjunction - Quark?
